Note
The lac repressor binds to the lac operator to inhibit transcription in E. coli. This inhibition can be relieved by adding lactose or isopropyl-beta-D-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG). The symmetric lac operator was optimized for tight binding of lac repressor.
